Carbon Intensity Explained

What is a CI score, and why does it determine your revenue?

A carbon intensity (CI) score measures the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing one unit of energy from a fuel, expressed in grams of CO2 equivalent per megajoule (gCO2e/MJ).

In every major low-carbon fuel program - LCFS in California, CFR in Canada, ISCC in Europe - your CI score is the direct input to how many compliance credits you generate. A lower score means more credits. More credits means more revenue.

Most producers don't know their indicative CI score until they've already paid a consultant and started a formal certification application. That creates months of uncertainty. Our calculator solves that.

CI Score Components

CI = Feedstock Emissions
    + Transport Emissions
    + Process Energy Emissions
    − Co-product Credits
    − Carbon Removal Credits
  • Feedstock — Cultivation or waste diversion emissions
  • Transport — Logistics from source to plant gate
  • Process energy — Grid electricity, natural gas, diesel
  • Co-products — Credits for recovered energy or materials
  • Carbon removal — Biogenic carbon credits (pathway-dependent)

Program Coverage

Indicative CI scores across every major scheme.

Whether you're an RNG producer pursuing LCFS credits, a biomethane operator certifying under ISCC, or an ethanol plant exploring your CI position, the calculator produces a scheme-specific score with a transparent breakdown.

How It Works

From process data to indicative score in three steps.

No account required. No consultant fee. Upload your docs or enter key inputs manually and get a transparent, scheme-specific CI breakdown you can act on immediately.

01 · Upload

Drop in your feedstock and production docs.

CSV, PDF, or filled-in templates. We parse the inputs we need to compute a directional score. Or enter key values manually.

02 · Score

The calculator produces your indicative CI.

Advanced Mode

Override every input we model.

Override transport distances, energy mix, and process losses
Adjust production specifics and co-product allocation

CI Score → Revenue

Your CI score is your revenue ceiling.

In LCFS, CFR, and other credit-generating schemes, every gCO2e/MJ improvement in CI translates directly to more credits per unit of fuel produced. At scale, a well-optimized CI pathway versus a default assumption can mean millions in annual credit revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about CI scoring.

The questions we hear most from producers, developers, and compliance teams exploring CI certification for the first time.

What's the difference between an indicative and a certified CI score?

An indicative score is a directional estimate from your available production data and reasonable defaults. A certified score has been verified by an approved third party and registered with the relevant authority. Indicative scores guide investment decisions; certified scores are required to generate and sell compliance credits.

How accurate is the indicative score?

Accuracy depends on the quality of your inputs. With full production data, indicative scores typically fall within a few gCO2e/MJ of the certified result. With basic inputs, default assumptions widen the range. The calculator is transparent about which values are estimated vs. user-provided.

What inputs do I need?

For a basic score: feedstock type, production pathway, annual production volume, and primary process energy sources. For a refined score: transport distances, energy mix detail, and co-product allocation. You can upload a process document and the calculator will extract relevant values automatically.

Does my data stay private?

Uploaded documents are used only to extract CI-relevant inputs and are discarded after extraction. The tool is fully anonymous until you choose to download your report, at which point we ask for an email to deliver the file.

Can I model multiple schemes at once?

Yes. For most fuel types and pathways, the calculator produces a side-by-side CI score and projected credit revenue across all applicable schemes simultaneously - useful for biomethane producers deciding between LCFS, CFR, or both.

What comes after the indicative score?

Once you have an indicative CI and revenue estimate, the next step is a formal certification application with an approved verifier. Mangrove's platform handles the ongoing data management, audit preparation, and credit reporting that certification programs require.
