In June, Puro.Earth published its latest Biochar Carbon Removal Methodology marking a significant leap in its methodological rigor and depth. The new draft expands to 142 pages of detailed requirements, processes, and quantification guidance, providing a more prescriptive approach to Puro’s biochar certification requirements.
At Mangrove Systems, our Carbon Intelligence Team continuously monitors such updates to ensure our platform remains aligned with evolving carbon credit standards. In this post, we’ll explore what’s new in Puro’s methodology reporting requirements, and how Mangrove’s platform helps project developers navigate and comply with these updates.
Puro is eliminating traditional LCA reports from their process, stating these documents are “not suited to the Puro Standard, as its key elements are either covered in other project documents (e.g., Project Description, CORC Report Summary) or not relevant for the CORC issuance process (e.g. an LCA Report contains static results and figures while CORC issuance requires updated data for each period).” Now, projects can choose how to send this data, either through a structured spreadsheet format or through a dMRV platform like Mangrove.
With our built-in dMRV tools, developers can skip time-consuming and manual spreadsheet modeling. Mangrove streamlines data collection across your value chain, performs transformations on raw inputs, and runs a continuous LCA quantification model, producing reports and documentation that comply directly with Puro’s LCA model template. This saves time, reduces error, and makes reporting and verification easier for new and existing projects alike.
The new standard now mandates project developers maintain documented quality control procedures to monitor GHG inventories and ensure accuracy in net removal calculations. Puro notes that the system should be designed to ensure the data is presented in accordance with “relevance, completeness, consistency, accuracy, transparency, and conservativeness.”
Mangrove has embedded data health checks and anomaly detection tools directly into our platform to identify methodology non-conformities before your verification period commences. This means developers can automate quality control and assurance checks for all of the listed parameters in the new methodology, ensuring that all submitted data is consistent, validated, and audit-ready to enable quicker verification and commercialization of your credits. Mangrove will also support you in writing your Quality Control and Monitoring Plans highlighting how our tools make this possible.
Puro’s 2025 update explicitly requires developers to “have in place, maintain, and utilize an information system to keep records of all monitoring activities associated with the carbon removal activity,” including records on parameters monitored and measurements performed that are time-stamped and quantitative. These records must be accessible to the auditing body and kept for at least two years post-crediting period.
Mangrove provides a secure data repository with full chain of custody traceability linking all quantification models and claims back to their original evidence source. Auditors can seamlessly access the required documents for any specific unit of biochar sequestered, streamlining the verification process and reducing audit friction. Our system stores a comprehensive log of data for as long as the developer is a customer with Mangrove, and the developer always retains full ownership of the information so they can download a zip file of their records at any time.
While the 2025 Puro methodology update raises the bar in terms of documentation, traceability, and analytical rigor, it also strengthens the credibility of CORCs issued under this framework. These updates align with global efforts to define permanent carbon removal more clearly, positioning biochar as a durable and high-integrity solution in the CDR ecosystem.
At Mangrove, we’re building tools that help you stay ahead of evolving standards and methodologies. Our platform is purpose-built to help project developers meet (and exceed) the new Puro.Earth biochar methodology requirements with confidence and ease.
If you're preparing a new project or upgrading an existing one under the 2025 methodology, Mangrove’s integrated tools and automation will save you time, enhance quality, and ensure audit-readiness every step of the way.
